Paul Tierney Ph.D., LPC-S

 

Paul Tierney, PhD, LPC-S, was named Assistant Professor in the Department of Counseling and Human Services. He received his Master’s in School Counseling from the ÐÓ°ÉÔ­°æ of Montevallo and his Ph.D. in Counselor Education from Auburn ÐÓ°ÉÔ­°æ. Dr. Tierney brings substantial clinical experience in schools, community settings, and hospitals in Alabama, where he was licensed as a professional counselor and certified as a school counselor. Dr. Tierney has a strong focus on at-risk youth, having created behavioral intervention programs for alternative school students in Birmingham, AL, and consulted with various school systems across the state. A licensed foster parent, he has fostered nine children and adopted two. His community involvement earned him a distinguished alumni award and he was the first recipient of the Community Champion award presented by the mayor of his hometown. As a former Clinical Director and adjunct professor at the ÐÓ°ÉÔ­°æ of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Dr. Tierney developed programs addressing homelessness and substance use disorders for both adolescents and adults. Dr. Tierney’s research focuses on enhancing outcomes for at-risk youth and improving counselor advocacy skills.
